Alec Baldwin and Emma Roberts Like the 'Lymelife'
The big screen is about to get lymey. Variety reports that Derick and Steven Martini's dramedy lymelife finally getting made, and it's got a solid cast along for the ride. Alec Baldwin and Emma Roberts lead the pack, followed by Cynthia Nixon (Sex and the City), Rory Culkin (Zodiac), Kieran Culkin (Igby Goes Down), Jill Hennessy (Crossing Jordan), and Timothy Hutton (The Last Mimzy).
A retro piece taking place in late '70s Long Island, the coming-of-age project focuses on "two families who fall apart when precarious relationships, real estate problems, and Lyme disease converge in the heart of suburbia." It's a film that the brothers have been trying to get made for years. The project was developed during the 2001 Sundance Filmmakers Lab, and experimental scenes were even shot with Kieran. (He's since been replaced by Rory, as he's grown too old for his original role. He'll now play an older brother.) Heck, even Baldwin has been attached to the project for years, so while the film might have struggled to get to this point, there's something in it that has a long-term hold on two of the main players.
Filming gets underway next week in New Jersey, and the picture has a tentative release date for January 2009.

Nancy Drew: "Drew's Clues" Special Edition On-Demand Review
Nancy Drew |
Nancy Drew, the feature film that was supposed to make Julia Roberts' niece Emma a movie star, was recently released to DVD. Inspired by the 78-year-old Stratemeyer Syndicate series of junior detective books,
the PG-rated mystery underperformed in theaters, was drubbed by critics, and took an unusual nine months to come to DVD. Instead of final product, Warner Bros. sent us a press screener of Nancy Drew: Drew's Clues, a fullscreen/stereo presentation with bubbles of fun facts turning up throughout (à la VH1's hit late-'90s "Pop-Up Video" format). Available exclusively through digital outlets like Pay-Per-View and On-Demand, Drew's Clues is not the ideal way to first see the film. But, like the fact tracks occasionally found on DVD, it is mildly enriching for those who already like the movie (and are able to overlook not seeing it in 2.35:1 widescreen as intended). The sound-accompanied tidbits that arise seem aimed at youngsters, with light revelations regarding stunts, props, actions, and leading lady Emma Roberts. Infrequently amusing and somewhat annoying (as when it adds onto a steady count of Nancy's dozens of outfits), Drew's Clues isn't worth going out of your way to experience if you weren't already planning to have a second viewing via a digital outlet.
As for the movie itself, it's strictly middle-of-the-road fare; good for a few laughs, but too skewed towards girls aged 8-13 to do much for entire families. Adult viewers may be interested to see the familiar faces assembled: Tate Donovan plays Nancy's disapproving father;
supporting roles are held by Rachael Leigh Cook, Pat Carroll, and Barry Bostwick; and cameos are made by Adam Goldberg, "SNL" has-been Chris Kattan, Ocean's geek Eddie Jemison, and Bruce Willis. (Yes, Bruce Willis.) Most of our time, however, is spent with insatiable teen sleuth Nancy, her new pal Corky (played by the ever-streetwise Josh Flitter), her hometown boyfriend Ned Nickerson (Max Thieriot, The Pacifier), and some snobby girl nemeses (Kelly Vitz, Daniella Monet). The plot relocates Nancy to Los Angeles, where a grand, opportune mystery involves a Hollywood starlet (though inconsistent in its depictions, the actress is loosely Audrey Hepburn-esque) who disappeared 25 years ago under strange circumstances. It's all just a few notches above "Hannah Montana" and plays out like the kid-friendly made-for-cable fare that Roberts is used to having starred on Nickelodeon's three-season comedy "Unfabulous." You could easily do a lot worse or a lot better than Nancy Drew, but if you're going to see it, DVD seems like the better bet (with dual viewing formats, some short featurettes, a music video, and gag reel) than the Drew's Clues version we received for review. |

Emma Roberts Is The New Face of Dooney & Bourke
Continuing with the mega successful introduction of his teen trend collection over the past four years, designer Peter Dooney introduces a new collection targeted to today's young consumer. To symbolize the spirit of the collection, Dooney & Bourke has selected actress Emma Roberts, niece of the famed Julia Roberts, as the new face for the upcoming national ad campaign.
The campaign is set to debut in the themed "Young Hollywood" issue of Teen Vogue in October. Roberts is best known for starring in the Nickelodeon series "Unfabulous" and, like her aunt before her, is pursuing a big screen career. She has already been seen in movies such as last spring's Aquamarine and will be the lead in the 2007 release of Nancy Drew. There is no doubt that with her winning smile and bubbly personality, Emma Roberts is a rising star.
As a Dooney & Bourke model, Roberts follows in the footsteps of leading ladies Mischa Barton and Lindsay Lohan. For the current season, Peter Dooney turned it up a notch by teaming up with Emma Roberts, not only to model the teen collection, but also to lend a hand in designing. Emma spent a day with the Dooney & Bourke design team to create a new limited edition bag bearing her signature style which will debuting in December.
The teen collections featured in the Emma Roberts' campaign promise to be the hottest new handbags this fall. The bags are scheduled to hit Dooney & Bourke retail boutiques in October. They will also be available at department stores such as Bloomingdales, Lord & Taylor, Macy's, and Nordstrom and online at dooney.com.
Emma Roberts Shines In Otherwise Lackluster 'Nancy Drew'
Lindsay's in rehab and Paris is in jail and Britney is posting rambling letters to fans on her Web site. But teen and 'tween girls still have a wholesome role model to look up to - or rather, see eye-to-eye with - in ''Nancy Drew.''
There's something refreshingly quaint and unexpectedly necessary about the idea of this decades-old girl detective today, and rising actress Emma Roberts makes Nancy an easy character to root for.
And that's a good thing, because the immensely likable Roberts Eric, niece of Julia) also happens to be the best part of the film from director and co-writer Andrew Fleming, which offers a few laughs here and there but is otherwise contrived, cliched and stiff.
(Oscar-nominated costume designer Jeffrey Kurland deserves special praise, however, for dressing the petite star in an adorably retro array of plaid skirts and sweater sets, headbands and penny loafers. He also chose those cleavage-baring tops and micro-minis for her aunt in ''Erin Brockovich.'')
The target audience for ''Nancy Drew'' will probably enjoy it, though, which theoretically is what matters most. Overt references to classics ranging from ''Rebel Without a Cause'' to to ''Chinatown'' will surely go over their heads, and are likely to draw only the faintest smile of recognition from grown-ups who may have been dragged along to the multiplex. Adam Goldberg make cameos that register a bit more effectively.
While on an extended business trip to Los Angeles with her lawyer father , Nancy stumbles upon a mystery in the abandoned Hollywood Hills mansion the two are renting. Even though she promised Dad back in small-town River Heights that she'd stop sleuthing, she can't keep herself from investigating the death of movie star Dehlia Draycott (Laura Harring in flashbacks, harkening to ''Mulholland Dr.''.
Meanwhile, Nancy's prim, perky demeanor makes it difficult for her to fit in at a sanitized version of Hollywood High School, where mean girls Inga and Trish (Daniella Monet) and Kelly Vitz) alternately torment her and want to give her a makeover but do nothing to suggest that they're real people. Inga's little brother, Corky (the precocious Josh Flitter), develops a crush on Nancy, though, and becomes her eager partner in crime-solving.Max Theriot plays the freshly scrubbed would-be boyfriend from her hometown who conveniently shows up in L.A.)
Somewhere in the middle of all this, Nancy finds time to make a million phone calls and knock on a million doors to find the daughter (Rachael Leigh Cook) Dehlia gave up for adoption before her death decades ago, a young mother herself now who's the rightful heir to Dehlia's estate. This rouses the suspicions of a powerful lawyer (Barry Bostwick) who also may be crucial to helping her father's career, as well as the mansion's creepy caretaker (Marshall Bell).
The real mystery: When and where did Nancy Drew learn stunt driving?
''Nancy Drew,'' a Warner Bros. Pictures release, is rated PG for mild violence, thematic elements and brief language. Running time: 90 minutes. Two stars out of four.
