Lady Gaga in her super edgy

Taylor Swift: the Girl Decurled

Taylor Swift earned huge amounts of attention with her recent cover piece in Rolling Stone magazine, but one of the most stunning parts about the story had nothing to do with what she said. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the whole package was a pair of photos inside the magazine, in which she looked like a completely different person.

The look was achieved rather simply: "They straightened my hair," she told the national radio show GAC Nights: Live From Nashville. "It takes a lot of effort to do that, so I was very grateful for that."

For most of the world, that style was a new one for Taylor, though some of her former classmates in Hendersonville, Tenn., might have found it familiar. Before she was famous, she made a vaunted effort on her own to straighten out her ‘do.

"I used to do it in middle school to try to be cool," she said. "I definitely didn’t look as good it looked in Rolling Stone, ‘cause they had these professionals like ironing my hair with like a steamroller to get the curls out of it."

Taylor Swift was pleased with the hair and makeup people in the photo shoot, but she bonded even more with Vanessa Grigoriadis, the writer Rolling Stone assigned to the piece.

"She was with me for a long time, so we kinda got close," Taylor said. "So I was kinda looking forward to her coming into the rehearsals and getting to hang out because she’s very smart and I love being around people who are educated."

Vanessa grew up in urban New York City, while Taylor spent her early years in a small Pennsylvania town before moving to Hendersonville, a conservative suburb north of Nashville. Taylor found their differences amusing.

"I was driving her around my hometown," Taylor recalled, "and I’m like, ‘Oh, that’s the Methodist Church where everyone hangs out.’ She’s like, ‘What?’ I was like, ‘You know, the parking lot, the church parking lot. It’s in the middle of town, so you just park there in the parking lot and you wait for your friends to drive by and then you call ‘em and you find something to do that night.’ And she’s like, ‘I don’t understand that.’ ‘Cause they would hang out at cool places like, you know, the steps of the [Metropolitan Museum] in New York City and places like that. It was really cool gettin’ to hang out with her."

Taylor had phenomenal success when her Fearless CD spent 11 weeks at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 album chart, and she’s still hanging in there. Fearless remains at No. 5 on the list, while Taylor Swift is at No. 36, one notch ahead of the Jonas Brothers’ The 3D Concert Experience, which includes Taylor Swift’s live performance of "Should’ve Said No." As if that’s not enough, Taylor also has a song on the soundtrack to Hannah Montana: The Movie, which gets released Tuesday. The film hits theaters April 10.

Fearless Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift, the latest country music star to cross over to pop, is a music producer’s dream come true. She has all the qualities that spell success in incredible doses and she is so young. She was only 14 when she started work on her first hit song Tim McGraw in the album Taylor Swift. By the time she was 18 last year she had a No. 1 seller in Fearless, several hit singles, plus both her CDs in the Top 10 of the year end charts.

Take note of all of Swift’s other pluses. She has the face of an angel and a figure that rivals Paris Hilton’s. She sings in a sweet but full-bodied voice with little girl intonations that sounds so cute. Taylor is also an excellent songwriter with a gift for catchy, flowing melodies. Her songs do tend to sound alike but she will learn how to avoid that when she’s older.

Besides, Taylor has something better going on with her compositions. She has tapped into the realm of teen-age romance with the wisdom of somebody older and kids are all saying that they feel just like she says. Best of all, she writes lyrics like All those girls, well they’re beautiful — but would they write a song for you? for a boy who might be Joe Jonas.

Taylor Swift and the middle Jonas Brother had a much publicized romance last summer that ended with a much-publicized break-up. It was rumored that he did it over the phone. The incident later involved Miley Cyrus who commiserated with her friend Taylor just like what most teen-age girls do when in the throes of heartbreak. Fans say that Taylor’s Joe Jonas song is Forever & Always in Fearless.

But whether she wrote the songs for Joe or somebody else, what Taylor accomplished in Fearless truly speaks to the hearts of young teens. Love Story which is currently No. 1 hereabouts, plays on the tale of Romeo and Juliet. Fifteen is about entering high school. Our Song is about lovers in search of their theme song. The Best Day is for her Mom and the joys of family. Fearless has everything, particularly lots of the falling in love and breaking up stuff. Teardrops on My Guitar is the best of the latter. I do say that all that Fearless needs is something about a vampire to complete the teen-age romantic fantasy.

Other titles included are Fearless, Hey Stephen, White Horse, You Belong with Me, Breathe featuring Colbie Caillat, Tell Me Why, You’re Not Sorry, The Way I Loved You, Change and Should’ve Said No.

Taylor Swift’s Love Story is the number one tune of the moment in Metro Manila. It is number one in radio airplay followed by My Life Would Suck Without You by Kelly Clarkson; Come Back to Me by David Cook; Leslie by Rocksteddy; Just Dance by Lady GaGa; Thinking of You by Katy Perry; FX by Pedicab; You Changed My Life in a Moment by Sarah Geronimo; Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) by Beyonce; and Old Friend by Kyla.

The video of Love Story is also number one in the MYX hit chart for the week. The others that made the Top 10 are Old Friend by Kyla; Tonight by the Jonas Brothers; I Caught Myself by Paramore; Hintay by Callalily; You Changed My Life in a Moment by Sarah Geronimo; A Little Too Not Over You by David Archuleta; Desolation Row by My Chemical Romance; Thinking of You by Katy Perry; and Poker Face by Lady GaGa.

Taylor ceded the number slot to U2 in Billboard’s Top 10 of the Top 200 Albums this week. That is just fine. The girl had been number one for eleven weeks now and should not mind being taken a notch or two down the list. No Line on the Horizon by U2; Fearless by Taylor Swiftt; Middle Cyclone by Neko Case; The Fame by Lady GaGa; Dark Horse by Nickelback; Intuition by Jamie Foxx; The Fray by The Fray; I Am - Sasha Fierce by Beyonce; Slumdog Millionaire, the original movie soundtrack; and Paper Trail by T.I.

The Top 10 titles in the Hot 100 singles chart are: Right Round by Flo Rida; Dead and Gone by T.I. featuring Justin Timberlake; Poker Face by Lady GaGa; Kiss Me Thru the Phone by Soulja Boy Tell ‘em featuring Sammie; Gives You Hell by The All-American Rejects; The Climb by Miley Cyrus; Just Dance by Lady GaGa featuring Colby O’Donis; Heartless by Kanye West; My Life Would Suck Without You by Kelly Clarkson; and Blame It by Jamie Foxx featuring T-Pain.

Taylor Swift's 'Crazier' Music Video From 'Hannah Montana: The Movie'

A music video supporting Taylor Swift's song "Crazier", which serves as "Hannah Montana: The Movie" soundtrack, has been debuted. It captures Taylor taking the stage in an intimate neighborhood party, delivering the track accompanied by a live band.

During Taylor's live performance at the small bash, Miley Cyrus' Miley Stewart and Lucas Till's Travis Brody are seen standing close to each other, dancing slowly to the beat of the country song. Several scenes from the upcoming film are also included.

Beside featuring Taylor Swift's track, "Hannah Montana: The Movie" soundtrack album also includes songs from Miley Cyrus, Rascal Flatts, Billy Ray Cyrus and Steve Rushton. The album has hit U.S. stores on March 24, while the movie will not come out in U.S. theaters until April 10.

Taylor Swift: ‘We Wanted It To Be A Surprise’

Taylor Swift just saw the music video for BFF Kellie Pickler’s new single, “Best Days Of Your Life,” and popped in on her MySpace to tell her fans all about it. Check out what the 19-year-old musician had to say:

“Hey guys! I just saw Kellie’s new video, and I love it! We wanted it to be a surprise that we were going to be in it together, so.. Surprise! I’m so happy this is her new single. We wrote this song in the back of a tour bus on the Brad Paisley tour two years ago, and it’s so crazy to know that it has a music video now! The video is hilarious, and Kellie did a great job with it. So excited that she asked me to make a cameo. If you’re thinking of requesting some songs on the radio, definitely make that song one of them. Please.

“I’ll be seeing her soon, we’ve got my whole stage set up and have been rehearsing all day, every day. It’s like camp. But better. And Grant is constantly sound checking his guitar. All the time. Like.. as in.. Never stops. Every minute. We all have headaches. But in all honesty, I’m in heaven right now. Constantly having meetings with the video crew and the lighting guys and the carpenters and the band and running through things over and over and over again.. And you all know that meticulous organization is like my thing. I love organization. And meetings to insure organization. And how if you put enough hours and effort in, all the little pieces come together. I’m so excited for opening night. I can’t even wait.

“I’m gonna get back to work. Grant is still sound checking his guitar. Like he has been since we got here at 8AM. Just in case you were wondering. Love you guys!

Taylor Swift and Darius Rucker Still Stand Tall on the Charts

Taylor Swift's Fearless and Darius Rucker's "It Won't Be Like This for Long" once more reign on Billboard's country albums and country songs charts, respectively. It's Rucker's second consecutive week at No. 1 and Swift's 19th.

The highest-debuting album is I Told You So: The Ultimate Hits of Randy Travis, which pops in at No. 3, right behind Carrie Underwood's Carnival Ride. Underwood can (and should) take credit for introducing Travis to a new generation of fans via her respectful cover of his unmatchable 1988 hit, "I Told You So."

And, wonder of wonders, the stoic North Carolinian bows yet a second new album this week, Three Wooden Crosses: The Inspirational Hits of Randy Travis. It arrives at No. 31.

Your next assignment, Miss Underwood, is to resurrect Earl Thomas Conley. It's been too long since we've heard that smoke-laced voice and those sculpted lyrics.

The other new albums are Willie Nelson's Naked Willie (No. 29) and Ambition by the memorably monikered Zack Walther and the Cronkites (No. 51).

There are but two returning albums: Jewel's Perfectly Clear, which encores at No. 67, and the various artists CD, Songs 4 Worship: Country (No. 69).

Brad Paisley boasts the highest-charting new song, "Then" (No. 26). Then come Jack Ingram's "Barefoot and Crazy" (No. 56), Pat Green's "What I'm For" (No. 58) and Jonathan Singleton and the Grove's "Livin' in Paradise" (No. 60).

Albums No. 4 and No. 5 are the Zac Brown Band's The Foundation and Rucker's Learn to Live.

Rounding out the Top 5 songs are Swift's "White Horse," George Strait's "River of Love," Jake Owen's "Don't Think I Can't Love You" and Rodney Atkins' "It's America."

Can life hold more treasures than these?

TRUE Blood, the red hot

Anna Paquin (X-Men, The Piano) plays the lead character, telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse. British actor Stephen Moyer, who played a buff, tanned golden beach bum in The Starter Wife, goes pale and nocturnal as the 173 year old vampire, Bill Compton—Romeo to Sookie’s Juliet.

While Anna Paquin walked away with the award for Best Actress in a television series—Drama at the recent Golden Globe awards, I personally think one of the hardest roles to pull off is that of Sookie’s clueless horndog of a brother, Jason Stackhouse.

True Blood

The new US TV series True Blood, which starts here this week, adapted from the best-selling Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris.

To make matters worse, I found out that the lead actress was none other than our own Anna Paquin. She may have won a Golden Globe this year for her role in True Blood

Paquin gets to the point

"Come in here and show them your teeth," actress Anna Paquin yells into another room.

Actor Stephen Moyer walks in, a bit perplexed about why she wants him to open his mouth to a room of strangers. Then she giggles and asks him again to bare his fangs.

And he does.

"See," she says, smiling.

"He does have them."

As the star of the TV vampire drama True Blood, Anna Paquin thinks her co-star's pointy real-life canine teeth are cool. They are long and sharp like a vampire's would be. Strangers might find them a bit disconcerting, especially since Moyer plays a vampire on True Blood.

It's part of Paquin's charm to flirt. She can be playful and silly but rarely inappropriate or shameless.

She still loves to talk about acting, with the same vigour of a young artist although she's played the Hollywood game more than half her life. Despite her world travels, she still comes across as a bit of an innocent.

At 26, Anna Paquin's no longer the little girl audiences discovered in 1993's The Piano, for which she won an Academy Award for best actress in a supporting role. After a few high-profile period pieces and a big movie franchise (Rogue in the X-Men movies), she's grown up. Unlike many actresses who had careers as children, Paquin doesn't feel a need to declare to the world she's an adult.

"I never did kids films," she says.

"I was a kid in [serious] films most of my life.

"It wasn't as if I had to overcome this cute-kid-with-dimples thing."

Paquin has come of age while working.

Today, she is engaged by talking of her work.

She doesn't do the Hollywood party scene much. She lives quietly.

Paquin has little pretence for an actress with an Oscar on her mantle.

She isn't interested in being the star. She wants to be one of the gang.

Anna Paquin and her True Blood co-star were dating

In an interview with US TV Guide Moyer, 37, admitted the sparks flew with Anna Paquin, 26, at the first audition for the series last year, but they deliberately kept it quiet.

"The show is the star, not the two people having a relationship."

In an interview with the Star-Times in today's Focus section, Ball said Anna Paquin had "aggressively" pursued the role. "When my casting director said, would you be interested in Anna Paquin, I said, uh, yeah, would she be interested in this?"

Even though she has a glittering career in movies such as X-Men, Ball realised True Blood could allow Paquin to do things she mightn't on the big screen. He was right - it won her the 2008 Golden Globe award for best TV actress in a drama, to add to her 1993 Oscar for The Piano.

"She is the tent pole that this show hangs on. She is delightful in this role. She's charming, she's innocent, she's pretty, she's fiery, she's romantic, and you just really, really love her."

And she's just the same in real life, he says down to earth, professional, fun to be around.

But one of the big topics Ball had to canvass during casting was asking the pale and dark New Zealander a crucial question for her to truly become Sookie, the sassy and tanned southerner in the short shorts of Charlaine Harris's books: Are you willing to go blonde?

"She was like, 'Of course. This is something I would never do just on my own because it seems so superficial. But now I have an excuse to do it."'

Ashanti's Cousin Killed by Drunk Driver

Singer Ashanti pulled out of a scheduled concert in South Africa over the weekend after her cousin was killed by a 17-year-old drunk driver.

Quinshae Snead was on her way to Ashanti's hotel to pick up something for the Grammy award-winning singer before her Saturday concert when the accident occurred.

According to police, the 20-year-old was a passenger in a car that was rear-ended.

Snead was flung from the car as it rolled over and thrown into the path of another car in the opposite lane.
The 17-year-old suspect was driving without a license and had stolen his mother's car, according to Johannesburg metro police spokesman Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

The teenager was arrested for drunken driving and hospitalized.

The driver of the car Snead was in was also injured and taken to hospital.

Ashanti will escort her cousin's body back to the U.S.

Ashanti Web Site Pulled After Protests

Executives at Ashanti's record label have relented to pressure from civil rights leaders over a controversial news report on her Web site, which has been removed from the Internet.

The Web site, made to promote her new single "The Way That I Love You," greeted visitors with a news report about a fake murder spree.

The site's news report, which users can personalize by selecting a "weapon of choice" and "victim," claims to be linked to Ashanti's revenge-themed music video for the single, in which the singer plays a woman who stabs her cheating boyfriend to death.

But the report caused concern among parents and religious heads, and dozens gathered outside the Los Angeles offices of her label Universal/Motown on Tuesday to protest the site's content and demand it be taken down.

And their efforts have proved a success. The whole campaign has been pulled and visitors are being redirected to her official, non-offensive site, reports MTV.com.

A statement released by Universal/Motown bosses reads: "Following discussions with Ashanti, we have jointly decided to remove the TheWayThatILoveYou.com Web site that hosts the Gotchagram (fake report).

"Ashanti and her music have always been about self-empowerment and addressing the issues that are most meaningful to her. We stand by our artist and her creative choices."

Wedding Bells For Ashanti And Nelly

R&B star Ashanti has hinted she will marry her rapper lover Nelly in 2009.

Just four months after the couple went public with its four-year romance, the singer has confessed she is planning to walk down the aisle with Nelly.

When asked if wedding bells were on the horizon for her, the "Happy" hit maker tells Us Weekly, "Absolutely. It's in the cards for me. I believe that I have a couple more things I need to do before that happens."

But Ashanti urges fans not to believe all the gossip that's written about her and Nelly, despite the media correctly predicting their relationship, years before they admitted it to the world.

She adds, "I should have had six or seven kids, been married three times and secretly engaged now. But none of it's true."
