Selena Gomez Signs Up For A Feature Film That’s Decidedly Un-Disney

In trying to find a starring vehicle for up and coming young Disney spawn Selena Gomez, Universal Pictures and Strike Entertainment have gotten the rights to adapt the Jay Asher novel “Thirteen Reasons Why”. The book tells the story of a high school outsider who has sent out audio messages to let 13 people know what part they played in her suicide. Oh yeah, that’s right: she’s dead. The whole idea of this being Gomez’s first big starring vehicle seems weird to me for a couple of reasons.Firstly, the role of a suicidal high school dork is a terrible fit for a girl as conventionally attractive as Selena Gomez. But nobody can expect Hollywood to be that self-aware at this point, so it’s one that’s easy to overlook. But secondly, there is the fact that the whole movie is going to be about suicide. Doesn’t that seem a little grim for a chick with a huge fanbase of 12-year-old girls? I mean, I know The Wizards of Waverly Place dealt with dark magic, but I had no idea that it went this dark.

And finally, when doing a quick Wikipediaing of what exactly this girls 13 reasons are, quite a few of them involve sex scenes that are all either slightly rapey, or full on rape. I’d say that there’s a light dusting of rape over the whole story. Really Selena? I mean, I know Britney did a scene where she danced around in her underwear for her first big post Disney film, but has the collective morality degraded this quickly? We’re chomping at the bit to get our just-of-age teen idols out there slitting their wrists and taking it rough? What’s the over under on how long it takes for her to do her first “I’m not a little girl anymore” nude scene: six months?
